INTERNATIONAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPOSIUM 2024

Vision beyond external reality The visual system evolved to navigate the external world. Yet there are many neural
computations that humans perform without the input of external stimuli. Through visual
mental imagery, dreams, hallucinations, and synesthesia, portions of the visual
system simulate perception, engage in problem solving and predict future scenarios.
These internal processes, as documented through neuroimaging and lesion studies,
highlight the crucial role a neural mental model plays in day-to-day life.
